If you are thinking about starting your own radio show, then you have a lot to learn. Perhaps you have all of the technical skills you need for setting up your operation, but do you have what it takes to be a broadcaster?

Can You Communicate?

Communication skills are probably going to be at the top of the list if you want to be a broadcaster. You need to develop these both in speaking and writing. If you are not sure whether you have this skill, then test yourself. The next time you are talking to a group of people are you able to hold their interest? Do they appear to be engaged in what you are saying? Your listening audience is going to set these expectations on you.

Investigative Skills

Do you know what your target market wants, and if not do you know how to determine this? If you are not able to figure out the wants and needs of your listening audience, then you are not going to build a good base.

Are you Articulate?

Not only do you need to be able to communicate well, you need to be articulate. You need to be able to speak clearly and at the right pace with a clear voice. You may want to practice speaking, or start recording yourself so you can listen to yourself talk.

How is your Personality?

If you happen to be an opinionated type of person that may go well with some of your listeners who like controversy. You need to determine if your personality fits in well with a general audience.

Can you Handle Criticism?

Not every listener is going to speak well of what you are offering. Are you able to discern between constructive criticism and that which is just being hurtful?

These are just a few of the skills you will need to develop if you want to be a good broadcaster.
